What makes a photomontage “verified”?
03/09/2026Verified photography is one of our core services, it is at the heart of most of our work – good visuals will start with accurate photographs.
A photomontage can be verified based on a few fundamental elements. Each one’s degree of accuracy and detail has a direct impact on how reliable the outcome is.
1. Camera Position Recording
The first step is accurately recording the camera position, ideally within the OS coordinate system. This can range from low-accuracy handheld GPS devices to high-precision GNSS survey equipment capable of centimetre-level accuracy. Even small viewpoint errors can noticeably affect the alignment of distant elements within a visualisation.
2. Camera Equipment Standards & Settings
The industry standard is typically a full-frame camera with a 50mm lens, as this provides a perspective closest to human vision. However, camera settings are equally important. Focus distance, aperture (f-stop), shutter speed, and ISO all influence image quality, depth, and realism. Poor photography setup can compromise even the most technically accurate visualisation.
3. Reference Survey Data
Camera positions and camera settings are only part of the process. Equally important is the survey data used to align the photograph with the 3D model. This can range from unreliable sources such as Google Earth imagery – which we try to avoid for accurate visualisation work – through to high-accuracy survey information captured using laser scanning, topographic survey, drone photogrammetry, or LiDAR data. Without strong reference data, achieving accurate alignment becomes extremely difficult.
4. Proposed Development Data & Material Realism
To create a realistic representation of a proposed development, the visualiser must work from accurate information relating to the scale, position, height, and geometry of the design. One aspect that is still underrated is materiality. Reflectivity, surface finish, transparency, and lighting behaviour all play a major role in how believable a visual feels. A technically correct model can still appear unrealistic if the materials and lighting are poorly handled.
A verified visual is not created by a single piece of software or equipment; it is the result of multiple layers of measured accuracy working together.
